Despite his desperation for the gate to open again so he could escape, Owen was rather appreciating the time alone in the woods. It had been a while since he’d had a chance to be alone with his thoughts—something he sorely needed to deal with the reality of home right now. Ellarowan—and now Cayloken—had asked him several times if he was all right out here by himself. They clearly felt badly leaving him, but he wasn’t bothered about being alone.

He only hoped that he was right about the time difference between the worlds and that he really was only missing a single day at home. The idea that he might be gone for longer made him anxious, but he tried to keep those thoughts at bay. Nothing could be done about it right now, anyway.

He liked them well enough. Ellarowan was even beginning to grow on him a bit, and he found himself worrying about whether any of the challenges she was facing would ever be resolved. He wished he could do something to help her, but knew he was way out of his league.

Accidentally landing in a world where some people were magic had not been on his list of possibilities.

And now he feared he was only adding to an already fraught situation. He’d never intended to complicate anyone’s life by coming here. Except Quinn’s of course. He’d come here with the full intention of complicating her life, but…she would have wanted him to. He’d seen her often in his dreams lately, and while their conversations in those could never be counted upon as fact, he knew she missed him as much as he missed her.

He enjoyed Ellarowan’s visits, and he was invested enough that he almost wished he could stay to find out what happened—and to learn more about the whole keeper thing—but the longer he stayed, the more danger they were all in. He wouldn’t miss the chance to exit.

The cabin was a place he avoided most of the time. Although Ellarowan had reassured him that it was safe and nobody was likely to come out here, he wasn’t sure he could trust her judgment on that—all things considered. Too many people seemed to be keeping secrets from her.

So, every morning, he woke up well before sunrise and gathered all of his things, checking the cabin over several times to make sure he didn’t leave any traces. At first light, he headed out into the woods.

Despite Ella’s warnings, he’d found the forest to be peaceful and serene. During the daylight hours, he even felt safe down by the river, where he spent a fair amount of time devising a plan to make sure he could reach the gate when it opened again. If it opens again was a thought that sometimes invaded, but he did his best to push it aside. He’d seen it open any number of times from the other side. In fact, as near as he could tell, it opened every night on the other side, the same way the gate in Bristlecone had.
